The key to getting the most out of your cutting mat is proper care. Some of my mats are over 3 years old and I still continue to use them. After much research (lots of YouTube watching), reading through various blog posts, and trying several things, I have landed on the following steps which have allowed me to keep using my mats for several years without replacing them:
- I clean them after each project with baby wipes
- If I cut a lot of cardstock, then I’ll wash them with Dawn and let them air dry
- If mats lose their tackiness, I apply what’s called repositional adhesive
- I see regular posts recommending Awesome product from a Dollar store. I strongly advise against using it. It is powerful chemical and it will remove the coating off your mats
- Don’t lose the protective sheet that came with your mat. However, if it annoys you, as it did me, you can (at your own risk) store mats without the protective cover by putting them face to face with sticky sides touching each other. This has worked well for me for over several years now. If I feel that stickiness is gone, I re-apply adhesive again
- This short video will demo what my mats look like
